Monticello started this wrestling season focusing on individual improvement, with dual meet victories placed on the back burner.

Duals have probably moved closer to the front burner. These Panthers are now 6-0.

Monticello swept a home quadrangular meet on Thursday, Dec. 7, beating Durant 60-6, North Cedar 42-34, and Cascade 42-36.

Two days later, Monticello had three finalists, including two champions, at the Nashua-Plainfield Tournament.

Panther coach Ryan Luensman said the improvements have continued to become evident, especially at the Thursday quad meet.

“Every single meet, someone new is stepping up,” Luensman said. “New wrestlers are getting wins, people are fighting through sickness and injury, and others are making personal sacrifices for the betterment of the team.

“Every single win has been a complete team effort.”

The Cascade dual came down to the last match, with Chase Luensman pinning his opponent to secure the Panthers’ six-point victory.

“Cascade was by far the most exciting and intense meet of the night,” the coach said. “We had huge wins from Dylan Bowser, Thomas Broderick, Ethan Tallman and Andrew Wall.”

Forfeits played big roles in the Durant and North Cedar wins, but the Panthers had pins throughout the night, including Spencer Avery, Broderick, Bowser, Tallman; and Chase Luensman’s match-clinching pin.

On Saturday, Monticello placed fifth in a field of 11 teams, mostly from northern Iowa.

“Nashua was a new tournament (for the team), and we were excited for the different competition,” coach Luensman said.

Kain Luensman and Chase Luensman were champions, Andrew Wall was a runner-up, and Alaina Sunlin took third place.

“Kain had a strong tournament, beating a fifth-ranked wrestler from Postville (an 8-4 decision in the finals),” the coach said. “He was composed throughout the match and came out with a good win.

“Chase is just getting it done in all positions right now. Andrew had his highest varsity finish of his career. He has really come a long way for a guy that started wrestling less than two years ago.”

There was a junior varsity tournament at Nashua-Plainfield as well, and Monticello’s Tallman and Avery won championships, with Bowser finishing second.

“All of these boys have been doing a great job with their wrestling,” coach Luensman said. “They are working to improve every day, and it is showing on the mat.”
