Host Camanche topples Panthers
Home advantage has turned out to be a significant factor in high school bowling matches, and the Monticello Panthers were reminded how important it can be on Jan. 29.
The Panthers traveled to Imperial Lanes to face two strong Camanche teams, and lost in both varsity matches. The Indians won the boys’ match 3083 to 2746, and the girls’ contest by a score of 2790 to 2061.
“We were outmatched,” Monticello coach Brian Meyer said. “It was another one of those situations where you’re bowling a very good team at (their) home. They know how their lanes need to be played, and we were learning.
“We as a team need to learn versatility, release adjustments and lane play differences. They had a very good score, so it wasn’t that the lanes were bad, it was that we didn’t understand how to play them, and they did.”
In the boys’ varsity match, Camanche pulled away by winning the individual round by 129 and the Baker round by 208.
For the Panthers, Caleb Gillmore shot a pair of 200 games, 214 and 217, to finish with 431 in the individual round. Levi Temple had a 371 that included a 201 game. Kegan Arduser scored 367, and Hayo Eiben had 365.
“We had some good scores; they had better,” Meyer said. “They really walked away from us in Baker.”
Camanche swept the Baker round, winning the first game by four pins and the second one by five before controlling the last three.
Monti’s girls were led by Cassie Gillmore, who rolled a 200 in her second game and finished with 317. Jordyn Patterson followed with a 294 and Natalie Newhard had a 291.
Camanche was too strong, however, outscoring Monticello by 482 in the individual round and 247 in the Baker games. The Indians also won all five Baker games, although the Panthers fell just short in the final one, 152-147.
“We just needed to make some simple lane adjustments, and things got better for us,” the coach said. “The attitude on the girls’ side was very good. They’re competitive, but they seem to always to fun at the end of the day.”
In junior varsity boys’ action, Camanche won 2829 to 2126. Autry Fasnacht led the Panthers with a consistent 168-169–337 individual round.
“I was encouraged by how well the JV performed,” Meyer said.
Camanche didn’t have a girls’ JV team. Monticello totaled 1828, led by individual rounds of 294 by Hope Vorbeck and 293 by Jordan Lorenzen.
