I can make something good of this

I have been pastoring in Anamosa for 33 years and can't help believing that over the years I've heard and seen it all. But each year seems to bring a new twist to some old problems. Life has become more complex and the complications of these problems seem harder to unravel.

I remember a number of years ago our church had a garage sale and I spotted a big box of yarn.  A lady in our church used yarn to make things so I thought she might be interested in it. But there was a complication - the individual who gave it to us had let her children play with it, so it wasn't divided up into these neat bundles of colors but the whole box was one big knotted mess. When I showed it to her, she just replied 'I'm not touching that'! She knew something I didn't, and that was that the amount of time it would have taken to unravel it all, and the damage that would have been done to the yarn itself was not worth the effort.

How much like life is this? As youth we dream of this happy orderly life only to grow up and find out that sometimes it’s neither. It becomes complicated and, like the yarn, our nerves become frayed, and relationships that are meant to be long and happy are cut short.

We seek professional help, hoping that someone can help us untangle our lives; the doctor, the lawyer, the banker, the psychologist…they do their best, but life (like the box of yarn) never seems to get totally straightened out. As a pastor I'm usually the last person people come to see, and I think it’s because they know what my solution is going to be - Jesus. And they've never really been taught that God cares enough to get involved in their life. But there is one thing about God; He likes to be invited to help. When Jesus died and rose again He didn't just do it so we could go to heaven but that we may have a better life, that we may have peace of mind and joy of heart.

Another lady in our church who worked with yarn was at the same garage sale.  She came over and looked in the box of tangled yarn and decided to take it. She said 'I have time and I can make something good out of this'.  That's Jesus’ attitude toward us; He says 'I have time for you and I can make something good out of this'.

Please visit us at the Apostolic Assembly of Anamosa where Jesus takes time to make something good out of us.
