The marked improvement being shown by the Monticello High School bowling teams was evidenced last week, as the Panthers, both on the boys’ and girls’ sides, defeated two out of three opponents.

The Panther boys and girls have matched strides all season long, with each winning when the other does, and both are 3-4 on the season.

“The team is coming along very well,” Monticello coach Brian Meyer said. “I’m proud of where we are, and I feel great about the future.”

The Panthers opened the week with a sweep at Cascade Jan. 2. The boys won 2652 to 2429, and the girls prevailed 1913 to 1667.

At Cascade, Kegan Arduser led the Panthers with a two-game series of 414, Robert Pejchl totaled 390, and Hayo Eiben had 365. Arduser had the team’s top individual game, a 226, and Pejchl also broke the 200 mark with a 221.

A 193-pin edge in the individual round was key to the Panther victory. Monticello won four of the five Baker games as well, and totaled a 30-pin edge there.

Cassie Gillmore led the girls’ team at Cascade with a 298. Natalie Newhard had 277, including the team-high game of 160. Yutana Hughes checked in with a 225.

Next, the Panthers had a visit from West Delaware Jan. 25 at Legacy Lanes, and lost both matches. The Hawks won the boys’ match 3000 to 2800, and the girls’ contest 2557 to 2243.

Against West Delaware, the Panthers boys were close after the individual round, trailing by just 22 points, but got outscored by 178 in the Baker Round. Arduser had a 278 first game and a 483 two-game series, while Caleb Gillmore had a 266 and finished with 418. Levi Temple rolled 360, and David Titman had a 358.

“Kegan and Caleb both had fantastic games,” Meyer said. “But we missed a lot of spares in Baker.”

The girls were just the opposite; close to West Delaware in the Baker round (60 pins down) but losing by 254 in the individual round. Gillmore led the way with a 327, including a 166; Newhard had a 309, including a 164; Jordyn Patterson 270, Keeley Anderson 264, Yutana Hughes 263 and Evee Krouse 261.

“The girls battled. They did what they could do against a very good team,” the coach said.

The win over Bellevue, for both the boys and girls, was satisfying because the Panthers had lost to the Comets in their previous meeting, Dec. 7 at Bellevue. This time, the Comets visited Legacy Lanes Jan. 26.

The Panther boys won by 295 pins, 2695 to 2400, thanks mostly to an 1852 to 1619 advantage in the individual games. Leading the way were Eiben, with a 423 series including a 229; Arduser with a 380 including a 221, and Caleb Gillmore with a 371 that included a 215 line.

Monticello’s girls won 2057 to 1970, with the 106-pin edge in the individual round making the difference. Patterson had a 330 two-game series, Newhard had 291, Cassie Gillmore had 276, and Anderson totaled 271.

The Bellevue match included a sweep of the JV matches for Monticello. The boys won 1465 to 1138, with Jacob Farmer rolling a 318 two-game series; and the girls won 1221 to 909, led by Evee Krouse’s 292 series.

Meyer said he’s heard other coaches discuss the JV teams as afterthoughts.

“That’s not my philosophy at all,” Meyer said. “JV does matter. We’ve got seven graduating seniors. We need the JV kids to be productive, and to get as much training as everybody else gets, if not more. They’re the future.

“A lot of these kids have just started bowling, and they’re making huge leaps and bounds.”
