Monticello recorded two individual wins, and six top-five finishes, on the way to a sixth place team finish in the River Valley Conference Boys Track and Field Meet Thursday, May 2 at Camanche.

Earning conference championships were Avery Martensen, who won the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 15.59 seconds; and Wade Picray, discus winner with a distance of 145-foot-3.75.

“I thought we did about as well as we could,” Monticello coach Greg Williams said. “I think we came in and competed to the best of our ability. We had some good performances and finished in the top half.”

In the conference meet, the Panthers competed without four veteran athletes, all of whom are injured and will also miss Thursday’s state qualifying meet: Carter Cruise, Cole Cruise, Will Rieniets and Lake Stahlberg.

Bellevue was the runaway team champion with 138.5 points, followed by Northeast with 83, Camanche with 82, Mid-Prairie with 73, Tipton with 72, and the Panthers with 61.5. There were 14 teams in all.

Other top-five finishes came from Jasper Nietert, fourth in the 1,600 (with teammate Carter Kurt seventh), Caden Ungs, who tied for fifth in the high jump; and the distance medley and 4x200 relay teams. Luke Weber finished sixth in the discus to give the Panthers two point-scorers in that event.

Marion meet

Prior to the conference meet, Monticello competed in the Marion Invitational April 29, and finished 10th.

The best event for Monticello in that meet was the discus, in which Picray finished third and Weber was fifth. Monticello was also fifth in the sprint medley and distance medley relay events.

“It turned out to be a nice night to run,” Williams said. “Our underclassman distance runners Jayden Orcutt, Levi Temple, Owen Ray and Zach Chapman all had big personal bests in their 800s.”

Panthers host

state-qualifier

Monticello will host the Class 2A State Qualifying Meet Thursday, May 9 beginning at 4 p.m. at Dean Nelson Field.

The top two in each event will automatically qualify for the May 16-18 state meet, and the next eight finishers statewide will earn at-large spots.
