It will likely be the largest meet the Monticello High School cross country teams will run in this season.

The Western Dubuque Invitational had runners from 26 schools, representing all classes. Even the state meet is limited to 18 teams per race.

“It was fun,” Monticello coach Dan Sauser said. “We like to go to meets where there is great competition.”

This one certainly had that – 10 girls’ teams were ranked in the state, along with nine boys’ teams.

The Panther teams shared a common trait in this meet, as the boys finished seventh and the girls were 15th.

“They didn’t particularly have their best race of the year,” Sauser said. “But there were some really good individual performances.”

In the boys’ race, Cole Cruise led the way with a 27th place finish.

“Cole had another solid race,” the coach said.

There were three personal records – Daltyn Kramer by 20 seconds, Zach Chapman by 12 seconds, and Carter Cruise by two seconds. Carter Kurt had a season-best time by 30 seconds.

Emily Schlarmann led the Panther girls, finishing 48th overall.

“It was her strongest race of the year,” the coach said.

She was among three varsity girls who ran season-best times. Triniti Etzel beat her previous 2018 best by a full minute, while Gabby Guilford and Schlarmann both had season-bests by about 30 seconds. The Panthers were missing Lydia Recker – one of the team’s top four runners most of the season – due to an illness.

“Team-wise, it was not where we want to be, but I thought the effort was there,” Sauser said. “We need to keep growing.”

The junior varsity boys finished seventh, and the JV girls were 13th in their respective races. For the boys, Austin Timm led the way, taking 42nd place. Gavin Baugh and Jayden Orcutt had personal best times, and six others had season bests.

The girls were led by Sydney Ballou in 46th place. Lizzie Petersen and Faith Hansen had season-best times.

New meet

For years, in the last week of the regular season, the Panthers would go to the North Linn meet. This year, they are skipping the trip to Troy Mills in order to compete in the DeWitt Central Invitational Oct. 4 in DeWitt.

Race times are 4:45 p.m. for varsity boys, 5:15 p.m. for varsity girls, 5:45 p.m. for JV boys, and 5:50 p.m. for JV girls. The middle school teams will run together, starting at 4:15 p.m.
