Iowa history author speaks

Iowa history author Linda McCann of Waverly spoke to a crowd in Monticello about her newest book: “Prisoners of War in Iowa.” The program was put on by the Monticello Public Library, and held in the City Council Chambers due to the expected crowd. McCann highlighted two POW WWII camps in Iowa that held German, Italian, and Japanese POWs during the war in Algona and Clarinda. Each camp held about 3,000 POWs and cost $1 million to build. The POWs did farm labor and worked in factories while in the camps. McCann said nothing remains of the camps today expect for history museums in those communities.
