Iowa needs Andy McKean

Letter to the Editor

To the Editor,

I am writing as a concerned and involved citizen of Jones County, a veteran of the United States Army, and a social studies educator in Jones County.

Over the last several years, Iowa’s once well-respected public school system has been attacked and eroded by politicians with little insight into education practice or policy. This is a terrifying trend that I hope will be corrected soon, but I don’t think our current representatives have this goal in mind as they would sooner prop up exclusionary private schools and, in some cases, charter their own. This profiteering from Iowa’s taxpayers must end in order to ensure the perpetuity of access to high-quality education in the great state of Iowa.

During my education career, I had the privilege of working closely with Andy McKean, who, in retirement, dedicated his time to supporting local schools as a substitute teacher. In my experience, Mr. McKean exemplifies Iowa values through his willingness to serve, desire to support local communities, and commitment to preserving Iowa’s necessary institutions. It is my belief, based on our personal interactions, that Mr. McKean exemplifies the qualities and caliber of public servant Iowans desperately need.

Sincerely,

Matt English
