James Alan “Al” Skelley

      James Alan Skelley,"Al", age 84, died April 16, 2021 in his home in Iowa City.

      Al was born in Monticello, Iowa, Nov. 21, 1936, to Arthur and Chloe Skelley. After graduating from Monticello High School with the class of 1955, he attended the State University of Iowa, graduating from the College of Commerce in 1959 specializing in accounting. While attending college, he met Ruth Hale. They were married in 1959, separated only by her death in 2013. Al was hired by the university in 1959 and dedicated 40 years in Residential Services, retiring in 1999 as a Business Manager.

      Al is survived by his daughter Christine Skelley Weber of Muscatine and her children, daughter Lauren and son Max Weber; son Andy of Iowa City; sister Cindy (Craig) Phair of New Brighton, Minn.; sisters-in-law Mae (Bob) Collins, Janice Hale; brother-in-law Jim Hale, and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

      Al was preceeded in death by his parents and wife.

      A gathering will be held for friends and family on Friday, May 7, 2021 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City, Iowa. A private family ceremony will be held for the inurnment of his ashes.

      In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or Camp Courageous. Attendees may wear masks and distance themselves to the degree of their concern.
