John “JC” Carlson, County Supervisor Dist. 3
Personal history: We moved to Olin in 1995 from Algona, Iowa, where my parents are from. I have since called Jones County home. in 2004, I graduated from Olin High School, studied parks and natural resources at Kirkwood. I am employed by John and Pat Knake of Onslow, where I have been a farm hand for the last 14.5 years. I am married to Haley (Dunne) of Wyoming, and we have two children: Grayson, 5, and Ella, 3. My wife is a school teach at Midland Elementary in Oxford Junction.
Why did you choose to run/re-run for county supervisor? Why should Jones County voters cast their ballot in your favor? I am running to try and help Jones County grow for the better and stand behind the people that call Jones County home. I have always been a man of my word and I feel that is something that has been lost by elected officials in not only Jones County, but all across the country.
What background/experience do you bring to the role of county supervisor? I have served on the Jones County Ducks Unlimited Committee since 2004, and for the past five years I have served as treasurer and vice chairman. I was recently elected as chairman for our chapter and am looking forward to that.
I served on the board at Little Bear Golf Course, where I as vice president and the following year was elected president.
What have you heard from voters regarding their concerns facing Jones County? How would you address those concerns? The biggest concern I hear from residents are road conditions and law enforcement being understaffed and underfunded. You cannot expect an officer to stay within the county if we do not have competitive wages and manpower to let him/her do their job safely. Road conditions across the county are a bumpy topic. The county has a budget on which they operate on and they can only gravel or pave so much at a time, especially with the rise in material costs across the board.
What do you think are the top three issues facing Jones County today? I would have to say infrastructure, law enforcement, and youth development and outreach.
