Talan Long of the Panthers hits a chip shot Wednesday at Tipton.
It was a perfect day for Class 2A Sectional Golf, May 14, at the Tipton Golf and Country Club and Monticello junior Parker Johnson took full advantage, shooting a two-over round of 74 (36-38) to place second overall and advance to the district meet.
Tipton (306), Cascade (316) and Beckman (329) claimed the top-three team spots to move on. The Panthers finished fourth with a 334, followed by Northeast in fifth (346), Camanche sixth (359), Lisbon seventh (359) and Bellevue eighth (373).
“We played well early on and were in second for quite a few holes. As the meet went on, Parker and Carson continued to play well, but we weren’t able to get a few more low scores and Beckman ended up edging us out in the last few holes,” Monticello coach Curt Tauke said.
Along with Johnson’s 74, the Panthers counted Carson Lambert’s 82 (40-42), Lucas Foust’s 84 (41-43) and a 94 (48-46) from Reid Hinrichs.
Talan Long carded a 98 (47-51) and Luke Welter a 99 (55-44) to round out the lineup.
“Parker continues to play well and has really peaked at the perfect time. I’m really happy for Carson as well, ending his golf career with his best 18-hole score,” Tauke added.
Tipton’s Hunter Daisy took medalist honors with a one-over 73. Johnson was runner-up, Tipton’s Owen Steinman was third and Northeast’s Madden Wiedner fourth, both with 77s, and Tipton’s Jett Kamberling was fifth (78).
In the final regular season dual, May 12, against Camanche, the Panthers came away with a 175-181 win.
At the Valley Oaks Golf Course in Clinton, Johnson won medalist honors with a 40.
Long followed with a 44, Foust added a 45 and Hinrichs’ 46 rounded out the counting scores. Lambert shot 47 and Tate Long 53, but were not counted.
“We didn’t have a lot of experience with this course, but it was a nice day weather-wise,” commented Tauke. “Parker has really come on and played well down the stretch. Talan had a nice round and Reid fired a nice round for playing the course the first time.”
For the Storm, Charlie Sager led the way with a 43 and runner-up honors. Preston Rumler shot 44, Benjamin Burken 46 and Josh Murphy 48.
“Overall, I’m happy with the team score, 175, which is right around what we have shot all season,” Tauke said.
Camanche won the JV meet, topping the Panthers 195-225.
Kyle Arduser and Rece Bohlken led the Panthers with a pair of 52s, Jerin McElmeel added a 57 and a 64 from Ty King made up the Panthers’ top four scores. Brayden Wahl added a 71 to round out the lineup.
“This was great for the JV guys to go play a course that they haven’t experienced and get good experience for next year. Kyle has been a solid JV player for us this season and Rece had a nice round for his first year of golf,” added Tauke.
