Jones Co. receives historic preservation grant

The Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs announced it has awarded $140,457 from two different programs for historic preservation projects in 16 Iowa communities and counties.

Jones County was awarded a $14,780 grant for a reconnaissance survey project. With this project, the Jones County Historic Preservation Commission will undertake a limited countywide reconnaissance survey of potentially eligible historic and archaeological resources in Jones County. The project will include a literature review, volunteer and consultant-led survey, and preparation of a survey report documenting some of the county’s rural resources.

The Certified Local Government (CLG) program encourages governmental partnerships, provides training and technical assistance, and supports preservation of historic resources at the local level. Iowa’s CLG program is one of the largest of its kind and is administered by the State Historic Preservation Office in conjunction with the National Park Service.

The Historical Resource Development Program (HRDP) provides funding for historic preservation, documentary collections and museum projects. The HRDP funding comes in the documentary collections category, which provides matching grants to preserve, conserve, interpret and educate the public about historical resources such as diaries, letters, maps, newspapers, photographs, and other items.

The State Historic Preservation Office is overseen by the State Historical Society of Iowa, a division of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs. More information is available at www.iowaculture.gov.
