JRMC offering LSVT therapy

Jones Regional Medical Center (JRMC) is now offering LSVT BIG, an intensive, amplitude focused physical and occupational therapy program geared toward patients with Parkinson’s disease.

Research on LSVT BIG has shown improved ratings on improved balance, improvements in activities on daily living such as bed mobility, increased trunk rotation, and faster walking with bigger steps.

Kayla Kurt, PT, successfully completed the LSVT BIG training and is now certified to help patients using LSVT methods.

“This program assists in helping patients increase the overall size of their movements to improve their overall mobility,” stated Kurt. “Oftentimes, with people who have Parkinson’s disease, their movements become very small. With this research-based intervention program, I focus on making their movements BIG. A common phrase during this program is ‘If you don’t feel like it’s TOO big, you are not moving big enough.’”

LSVT BIG is customized to the unique goals of each patient including both gross and fine motor skills. Treatment consists of 16 sessions: four consecutive days a week for four weeks, individual one-hour sessions, daily homework practice, and daily carryover exercises.

If you are interested in the program, please contact Jones Regional Therapy Department at 319-481-6327 or e-mail Kurt at kayla.kurt@unitypoint.org.
