BOYS BASKETBALL

Week two of the 2016-17 season saw the Monticello junior varsity boys basketball team get on the winning track with wins over the Camanche Indians and North Cedar Knights.

The Camanche game on Tuesday, Dec. 6 in Monticello was an outstanding junior varsity game. Both teams traded leads in a well-played, hard-fought contest. Monticello led by three points at halftime. The Panthers extended their lead to six points at the end of the third quarter 38-32.

In the fourth period the Indians came roaring back on torrid three-point shooting. With one minute remaining the Panthers clinged to a one point lead, 50-49. Monticello held the ball while Camanche repeatedly fouled to get the Panthers to the free throw line. With five seconds remaining Tony Wallerich made two clutch free throws to give Monticello a 52-49 lead, which Gavin Cooper sealed with a last second steal. Will Reiniets led Monticello with 15 points.

On Friday, Dec. 9, the Panthers traveled to North Cedar and came away with a convincing 38-21 victory. Monticello led throughout and dominated defensively. The Panther bench saw considerable playing time and made solid contributions. Rieniets had another outstanding offensive performance, leading all scorers with 15 points. Monticello won every quarter.

The JV boys are now 2-2 overall and in River Valley Conference play.
