JV Panthers close with pair of wins

VOLLEYBALL

     Monticello won its final two matches of the junior varsity volleyball season to finish with a record of 6-10.

     Prior to the wins, the Panthers had four defeats. First, the Panthers played at Center Point-Urbana Sept. 16 and lost 9-21, 9-21. Kristen Roher had three digs. Mallory Steiner had two kills, three assists and two digs. Rylee Bauer had two kills.

     On Sept. 24, the Panthers played host to Cascade, and lost 21-25, 25-27. Mallory Steiner had three kills, eight assists, seven digs and two aces. Allie Barnhart had eight digs. Gabrielle Steiner had four kills and eight digs. Caroline Olson served 13-for-13 with five digs. Bauer served 10-for-11 and had two digs. Aubree Fairley had seven digs. Emily Schlarmann and Adele Hogan had two kills apiece.

     At Tipton Sept. 26, Monticello lost 20-25, 21-25. Barnhart had 11 digs. Mallory Steiner had two kills, five assists, two digs, and served 8-for-8 with four aces. Bauer had four kills and two digs. Fairley had three digs. Maddie Tobiason had two kills.

     Monticello then traveled to Bellevue Oct. 1, and lost 22-25, 14-25. Mallory Steiner had 11 assists, 14 digs, and served 11-for-11 with four aces. Barnhart had 13 digs. Roher had three kills and three digs. Tobiason had two kills. Fairley had three digs.

     Against Camanche at home, Monticello won 25-19, 25-17. Bauer had seven kills and three blocks. Mallory Steiner had six kills, eight assists, three aces and two digs. Barnhart had 11 digs and two assists. Fairley had six digs. Tobiason had two kills. Schlarmann had four digs. Louise Rydell served 7-for-8 with three digs.

     In the final match of the season, the Panthers swept Iowa City Regina at home, by scores of 25-16, 25-19. Mallory Steiner had four kills, seven assists, 14 digs, and served 8-for-9 with five aces. Barnhart had 15 digs and served 11-for-12 with four aces. Bauer had four kills, three aces and a block. Schlarmann had five digs. Tobiason had two kills and a block. Olson had two kills and two digs.

     “The highlights from the season were getting second place at our home tournament, and winning these last two matches,” Monticello coach Kylie Nagel said. “The girls were playing so well at the end of the season, playing together, talking and hitting the ball hard.”
