JV Panthers open with two victories

SOFTBALL

Monticello started its junior varsity softball season with a pair of victories last week.

The Panthers opened the season with a 15-2 win at Marion May 21. An 11-run fourth inning broke the game open for Monticello.

Jaelynn Kraus pitched a three-hitter to pick up the win, striking out two. Kraus also went 2-for-3 at the plate, as did Taylor McDonald. Several varsity players competed in the game since many of the regular JV players were unable to attend.

On May 23, the Panther JV played host to Bellevue and won 11-1. Again a big inning was key; Monticello scored eight runs in the third inning.

Mallory Steiner pitched for the win, working four innings and striking out three. Tori McDonald had a double and two runs batted in. Kendall Ruden also had two RBIs.
