It has been a strong season so far for the Monticello junior varsity baseball team, which won five of its first seven games, including a 4-1 mark against River Valley Conference opponents.

The Panthers started their season with a single game at Dubuque Wahlert May 29, a 10-1 loss in five innings. Monticello was held without a hit in the game.

Monticello traveled to Bellevue for a June 2 doubleheader, and won by scores of 22-1 and 19-1. In the first game, Lucas Foust pitched for the win, allowing one hit and striking out one. Foust also batted 2-for-2 with a triple and three runs batted in. Scoring three runs apiece were Peyton Schilling and Easton Lee.

In the second game, Gabe Goodyear batted 2-for-2 with a double and four RBIs. Conner Jordan had a two-run triple, and Schilling hit a three-run double. Jasper Nietert was 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Jonah Luensman and Goodyear shared pitching duties.

On June 3, Monticello traveled to Wilton for a single game, and won 2-0 as Reed Brunscheen and Schilling combined on a three-hit shutout with five strikeouts. An RBI double by Dylan Monk in the first inning brought in Jordan with the first Panther run, and Brunscheen doubled home Luensman in the fifth inning.

At Mid-Prairie June 8, the Panthers lost 6-1, as they were held to four hits, singles by Cael Sampson, Lucas Bartachek, Schilling and Monk. Starting pitcher pitched and took the loss.

The Panthers played host to Durant June 10 and won 8-0, as Reed Brunscheen pitched five shutout innings.

Peyton Schilling led the way offensively, going 2-for-2 with four runs batted in. Chesney Capron contributed with two hits as well.

Next, Monticello played host to Maquoketa Valley June 11 at Dailey Field, and won 15-2. Lee had two of the Panthers’ eight hits. Conner Jordan reached base in all three of his at bats, and scored three runs. Foust earned the win on the mound, pitching three innings and allowing no earned runs. Cole Welter pitched an inning of relief and also held MV without an earned run.

“The whole lineup did a nice job of contributing,” Monticello coach Adam Szurkowski said.
