JV, sophs, frosh play Easton Valley

VOLLEYBALL RECAP

Junior varsity

     A pair of narrow losses opened the season for the Monticello junior varsity volleyball team.

     The Panthers played host to Easton Valley Sept. 3, and lost by scores of 29-31, 20-25. Allie Barnhart had 10 digs. Mallory Steiner had 11 assists, five digs, and served 11-for-11 with two aces. Gabrielle Steiner had six digs and three kills. Rylee Bauer had six kills. Caroline Olson had four assists and three digs. Maddie Tobiason had four kills. Aubree Fairley had two digs, Emily Schlarmann had two kills, and Kristen Roher had one kill.

     “The girls kept fighting during the first set,” Monticello coach Kylie Nagel said.

     On Sept. 5, the Panthers played at North Cedar, in Clarence, and took the Knights to a third set before losing 25-21, 13-25, 2-15. Barnhart had eight digs. Mallory Steiner had five assists and two digs. Bauer had four kills, three blocks and two aces. Olson had three blocks, two kills and two assists. Schlarmann had three kills, Fairley had three digs, and Tobiason had two kills.

     “This year our team needs to focus on becoming better communicators, finding a leader and becoming more aggressive,” the coach said.

    

Sophomore team

     The Panther sophomore volleyball team scored a two-set sweep of Easton Valley Sept. 3 at Monticello High School, winning 25-11, 25-21.

     Jaelyn Aitchison had 10 digs and nine assists for the Panthers. Piper Hansen had seven digs and three aces. Kylee Van Dorn had four kills. Madison Butterworth had five aces and three kills. Emma Sperfslage had six digs. Aleasha Schilling had three kills and two digs. Brea Stahlberg had two aces.

 

Freshman team

     Monticello’s freshman volleyball team started its season with a home match against Easton Valley Sept. 3, and won in five sets, by scores of 21-14, 11-21, 21-16, 14-21, 15-5.

     Olivia Zimmerman had seven digs, six aces and three kills for the Panthers. Mia Jaeger served 14-for-14 with four aces, and had four digs and three assists. Kiara Rigby had four aces and three assists. Nora Sperfslage had three assists. Marisa Grant had two aces, and Dori Paddock served 5-for-6.

 

Eighth-grade team

     Monticello’s eighth-grade volleyball team opened its season against North Cedar Sept. 5 in Clarence, and won four out of seven sets. The scores (Panthers first) were 21-13, 21-13, 15-13, 15-7, 10-15, 4-15, 0-15.

     Keziah McQuillen had five aces and four kills for the Panthers. Taylor Gassman had five assists and two aces. Jordan Fangmann had three aces and two kills. Getting two kills apiece were Kinzi Schlarmann, Kendra Davis, Lacie Koppes and Abby Sharlow. Serving two aces apiece were Gabi Barnhart and Kendra Mescher. Sami McElmeel and Emma Porter had two assists each. Barnhart served 9-for-9.

    

Seventh-grade team

     Monticello faced North Cedar in a seventh-grade volleyball match Sept. 5 in Clarence, and won two of six sets, with scores of 21-14, 21-18, 8-15, 10-15, 7-15, 9-15.

     Jayden Kuper had nine kills and seven aces, while serving 15-for-15. Cadence Olson had six assists, and Hailey Henderson had three. Seneca Freeze served two aces.
