JV surges to 3-0 beginning

   Three wins got the season under way for the Monticello junior varsity football team.

   The Panthers opened the season with a 28-14 win at Bellevue on Monday, Aug. 29. Details and statistics were unavailable.

   Monticello picked up its second win of the season Sept. 2 at home against Maquoketa, by a score of 33-7.

   The Panthers earned first quarter touchdowns on a five-yard pass from Brady Gogel to Gage Dutra, a 24-yard pass from Gogel to Jerin McElmeel, and a one-yard plunge by Gogel.

   Maquoketa answered with a second quarter touchdown, but the Panthers led 19-7 at halftime.

   Monticello picked up two more scores in the second half, a one-yard run by Gogel with 4:19 left in the third quarter, and a six-yard run by Tait Luensman with 1:22 left in the game.

   Luensman finished with 22 carries for 118 yards rushing. Gogel completed 12 of 19 passes for 135 yards. Dutra caught five of those for 55 yards, Conley Schauf had four catches for 39 yards, and Jerin McElmeel had two catches for 32 yards.

   Defensively, Matayeo Schmit recorded a sack, while Ty King and Gatlin Wright each had half a sack. Luensman made two interceptions. Keegan McElmeel had a tackle-for-loss.

   On Sept. 9, Monticello played at Dyersville Beckman and came away with a 14-6 victory. Details and statistics were unavailable at press time.
