Karl T. “Butch” Kurt May 3, 1939-Jan. 15, 2018

     Karl T. “Butch” Kurt, 78, of Cascade, Iowa, passed away Monday, Jan. 15, 2018 at 4:50 a.m. at Unity Point St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

     Friends and relatives of Karl may call from 3 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 18, 2018 at the Reiff Funeral Home in Cascade, Iowa, where a prayer service will be held at 2:30 p.m. and a KC Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Friends may call after 9 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

     Services for Karl will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Jan. 19, 2018 at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Cascade, Iowa with Rev. Douglas Loecke officiating. Assisting Deacon will be Steven Strang. Mass server will be Karle Kramer. Lector will be JoAnn Horsfield. Eucharistic Ministers will be Jean Conrad and Nancy Strang. Placing of the pall will be done by Larita Kurt, Jolene Kramer and Michael Kurt. Burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery in Cascade, Iowa.

     Honorary pallbearers will be Joyce McMullen, Jerry and Shirley McDermott, Urban and Linda Manternach, Milton and Jan Connolly, Wilfred and Mary Kay Connolly, Nancy Strang, Linda Takes-Davis, Harold Davis and Richard and Patricia Moore.

     Casketbearers for Karl will be Steve Kurt, Dale Preibe, Stan Preibe, Doug Kurt, Hunter Kramer and Bo Kramer.

     Karl was born May 3, 1939 in Monticello, Iowa son of George and Barbara (Weber) Kurt. He received his education in the former St. Mary’s School in Cascade. On Sept. 19, 1970 he was united in marriage to Larita Horsfield at St. John’s Catholic Church in Placid, Iowa. He was a dedicated beef producer and crop farmer. He farmed all his life in the rural Cascade area. He lost a leg in 1975 and continued to farm. He loved to play cards and visit with his friends and family.

     He was a member of St. Matthias Parish in Cascade, Cascade Knights of Columbus Council #930, Jones County Cattlemen’s Association, and the Farm Bureau Association. As a couple they were inducted into the Jones County Cattlemen’s “Hall of Fame” in 2016.

     He is survived by his wife, Larita Kurt; two children, Jolene (Doug) Kramer of Monticello and their children, Hunter, Bo and Karle Kramer; Michael Kurt of Prairieburg and his children, Christine and Colleen Kurt; one brother, Ronald (Pat) Kurt of Cascade; sisters and brothers-in-law, Vernon Becker of Hopkinton, Evadeen (Allan) Strang of Cascade, JoAnn Horsfield of Monticello, Daniel (Colleen) Horsfield of Cascade and Clarence Urbain of Epworth.

     He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Steve Kurt in infancy and Rev. Allan Kurt, Ralph P. (Lorraine) Kurt; two sisters, Wilma (Clifford) Priebe and Sr. Lucy Kurt; brothers and sisters-in-law, Eleanor Urbain, Edward Meier, Mae Becker and William Horsfield.
