Kathleen Rose Miles

Kathleen Rose Miles, warmly known as Kay to all that knew her, peacefully went home to Glory on Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2021. Kay had been ill for a short time, spending her last week surrounded by family and close friends.

Kay was born at John McDonald Hospital, Monticello, Iowa on Dec. 27, 1938, to Clarence (Bud) T. and Hilda (Dandl) Smith. She completed her education in the Hopkinton Schools. She married Norman L. Miles on Dec. 8, 1957, in the Hopkinton United Methodist Church. They farmed on the Miles Homeplace in the Buck Creek area until retiring from farming in 1988, then moved to the outskirts of Hopkinton. Kay worked as a home health aide for 31 years.

Kay’s family could always be assured of her love for them. Family and friends will remember how Kay shared her love of Jesus Christ by singing at many weddings and funerals over the years. It was important to Kay that people in her presence feel loved, known, and well fed. She was a passionate baker, specializing in cookies. Kay was active in numerous community groups throughout her life and had a deep love for the community of Hopkinton, and its rich history.

Kay is survived by her husband of nearly 64 years, Norman, of Hopkinton, daughter Julie (Danny) Reth of Delhi, sons Jason (Mary Kay), Joel (Sue) both of Hopkinton, 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, brother-in-law Ronald Miles, and sister-in-law Mary Haigh. She is preceded in death by her parents, infant sister, Jean Marie, brother Bob Smith, sister Maryanne Melchert Urh, and grandson Andy Reth.

A visitation was held at Goettsch Funeral Home in Monticello on Thursday, Nov. 11, 2021 from 4 until 7 p.m. The funeral was held in the Lenox Campus gym at 10:30 Friday morning, with interment in the Hopkinton Cemetery. The campus was a place that held a special spot in Kay's life.
