Marisa Kehoe finishes strong for Monticello in the 4x800 relay during the State Qualifying Meet May 9 at Tipton.
All four of Monticello’s entries in the upcoming State Class 2A Girls Track and Field Meet will have this in common:
Marisa Kehoe.
The senior battled back from what Panther head coach Vallerie Lynn called “some nagging injuries” in time for the State Qualifying Meet May 9 in Tipton.
Kehoe qualified individually in both the 400 and 800 runs, finishing third each time. She also anchored the qualifying 4x400 and 4x800 relays, both of which finished second.
“We are a whole different team when she is healthy and running well,” coach Lynn said. “She has been the glue that has held the distance group together. If she would not have had that amazing finish in the 4x400, we would be sitting home, because the time we ran is 24th (in the state).
“If she could come home with a medal or two, I would feel like that would be a deserving ending to her career here.”
Kehoe is seeded 10th in both individual events; the top eight at State earn medals. The 4x800, which includes Peyton Ries, Ava Capron, Leah Koehler and Kehoe, is seeded 13th. Also on the 4x400 are Ries, Keziah McQuillen and Capron.
The Panthers had one narrow miss; the distance medley team of Ries, Ava Zimmerman, McQuillen and Koehler missed a state spot by .07 of a second while finishing fourth.
Ries was fourth in the 200. Alyvia Husmann in the high jump and the shuttle hurdle relay team were both sixth.
“Emee (Himes-Luensman) and Raegan (LaGrange) both PR’d in the shot put,” the coach said. “The shuttle hurdle team took four seconds off of their (previous) season best.
“We as a team talked about how sometimes things work out and sometimes they don’t. You always second-guess your decisions as a coach, and I did that many times. But I felt we put out the best lineup we could.”
The state meet will be May 16-18 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
