A spread of just 13 strokes from its first golfer to its sixth helped lead the Monticello girls golf team to a fourth-place finish in the 12-team Lancer Invitational May 12 at Glynns Creek Golf Course in Eldridge.

The Panthers shot 399 in their first 18-hole tournament of the season, which also featured the best weather Monticello has played in. It was hosted by North Scott.

“Overall I was really pleased with a fourth place finish, as we are the smallest school in the tournament,” Monticello coach Joe Steen said. “Our goal was 390 as a team, and we almost made that.”

Lauren Ries took fifth place overall, shooting a 40 on the front nine and finishing with an 87. The medalist was Anna Jensen of Dubuque Wahlert, with a 71, three strokes ahead of runner-up Abby Martig of Dubuque Senior.

Dru Kramer had a 102 and Marissa McNally a 103 for the Panthers. Beka Prull shot 107, the fourth Panthers score to be counted in the team total.

Two days earlier, the Panthers suffered a 193 to 195 loss to Anamosa at Fawn Creek. The meet had originally been scheduled for the Monticello Golf Club, but was moved.

“I think overall we could have played better,” Steen said. “We left a lot of shots out on the golf course.”

Ries was meet medalist with a 45, and McNally had a 46. Kramer’s 58 and Prull’s 56 also counted in the team score.

“Marissa played great,” Steen said. “She has had a great start to the year. Rebekah was our fourth score in only her second meet.”

While the loss was disappointing, the North Scott tournament two days later was a step forward for the Panthers, the coach said.

“It is good that we have people we can count on any given night. I told the kids that we play for May, so we have some work to get done,” Steen said.
