Larry R. Rettenmeier, 89, of Cascade, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2023, at Mercy One Medical Center in Dubuque, Iowa, surrounded by his family.
Visitation for Larry was held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2023, at Peace United Church of Christ in Monticello, Iowa. Reiff Funeral Home in Cascade was in charge of arrangements.
Services for Larry were held at 11:30 a.m., on Saturday at Peace United Church of Christ with Pastor Frank Shepherd officiating.
Casketbearers for Larry were Adam Breitbach, Travis Breitbach, Joshua Koppes, Cody Koppes, Ben Puccio, Eric Green, Brandon Gaul and Scott Schwendinger.
He was born Feb. 18, 1934 in Missouri, son of Doris Kisting. He received his education in the Dubuque schools. On May 4, 1958 he was united in marriage to Shirley Annis in Central City, Iowa. He was employed by Cascade Municipal Utilities for several years.
He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army. He was a former member of the Cascade Lions Club and a bowling team at the former Cascade Lanes. He was an avid Cubs and Chicago Bears fan. He loved spending time with his family, often attending his grandchildren and great grandchildren’s sporting events. Larry was well known for his quick wit, and was always ready with a one liner that would put you in stiches.
He was a member of Peace of Christ United Church in Monticello.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Rettenmeier of Cascade; five children, Brenda (Tom) Breitbach of Rickardsville, Steve (Teresa) Rettenmeier of Rockwood, Tenn., Laurie (Joe) Koppes of Cascade, Audrey (Doug) Green of Hopkinton, and Julie Rettenmeier of Cedar Rapids; 20 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Betty Silver of Central City.
He is preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Glenda Kay Steger on Nov. 30, 2021; a great-granddaughter, Kenzie and one sister, Betty Longley.
A Larry R. Rettenmeier memorial fund has been established.
