    Larry W. Stoneking, of Monticello, passed away Thursday, Jan. 11, 2024 at his home.

    Visitation was held from 4 - 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 19, 2024, at Kramer Funeral Home in Monticello where a vigil service was held at 4 p.m.  Visitation continued at 9 a.m. prior to funeral mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Monticello.

    Funeral Mass was held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2024, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with burial to be held at a later date at the church cemetery. Rev. Paul Baldwin officiated.

    Larry was born on Dec. 31, 1934 in Stanwood, Iowa, the son of Clarence and Floy (Flansberg) Stoneking.  Larry graduated from Monticello High School in 1953. He married Mary G. Supple on April 20, 1954. They made their home in Monticello, Iowa. From this union, they had three children: Mike Stoneking, Mark (Kathy) Stoneking, and Dee (Merlin) Kray, all of Monticello. Mary died in 1982. Larry married Joan (Sperfslage) Weber on June 7, 1986.

    Larry worked at Freese Motors in Monticello for over 20 years. He then went to work for Jones County Secondary Roads. He was employed there for 22 years until his retirement in 1997.

    Larry was a member of the Monticello Fire Department for 20 years and also served as Chief. He was a member of the Monticello City Council for a number of years. In his younger years, he owned horses and enjoyed trail rides. Fishing was a lifelong hobby.

    He enjoyed woodworking and watching sports. Larry took daily drives to see what was going on around town which included stopping by the river to “check the dam.”

    Survivors include his wife of 37 years, along with his three children, and seven stepchildren, Jane Bibby of Cedar Rapids, Diane (Tom) Broghammer of Central City, Kathy (Mark) Stoneking of Monticello, Linda (Kevin) Burkle of Coggon, Susan Amberson of Chanhassen, Minn., Paul (Susan) Weber of Winthrop, and Melissa (Jeff) Sitzmann of Cedar Falls; 25 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren; in-laws, Betty Supple of Marion, and Louie (Bobbi) Sperfslage of Monticello.

    He was preceded in death by his parents and extended relatives.
