LETTER: Supreme Court finally got it right

To the editor,

Comedian George Carlin asked, “What do dogs do on their day off? They
can’t just lie around, that’s their job.”

The Supreme Court has rejected Ghislaine Maxwell’s challenge to her
criminal conviction for recruiting and grooming teenage girls for sexual
abuse by Jeffrey Epstein. Good for the court. They did the right, common
sense thing. They did their job. Most of us don’t expect a pat on the back
for doing what we’re minimally paid to do.

So, why is this a big deal? Because unlike bygone eras, you can no longer
rely on the Supreme Court (or other governmental branches) to do their basic
job. Critics believe the court does little “to rein in a president targeting opponents for criminal prosecution, eliminating hundreds of thousands of federal workers without congressional input and using funding halts to intimidate the country’s top universities,” according to Politico.

The same report states that “many legal experts say (Chief Justice) John Roberts has actually emboldened Trump.”

Abuser Maxwell recently demanded immunity when her case drew renewed
interest. I noticed a disappointing lack of outrage over her demand. Have you noticed how jaded we’ve become over such things? At least the Supreme Court
got this one right. In 2025, we need to take victories wherever we find them,
no matter how small.
