Light fight

Three Monticello firefighters on Pine Street (Johnny Russ, Mark Spensley, and Marv Kelchen) competed on Dec. 20 for the best Christmas light display. As viewers drove & walked up and down Pine Street, they voted for their favorite display with donations. All of the proceeds went to Monticello Fire Chief Don McCarthy as he battles Pancreatic Cancer. Each home handed out goodies to those who came to gaze at the lights. As word spread about the contest, KCRG reporter Taylor Holt contacted Russ about featuring the light fight live on the evening news. Almost 200 cars drove up and down Pine Street in support of the McCarthy family. The contest’s winner was Johnny Russ. (Photos by Kim Brooks)
