Manternach attests to husband’s hard work, character as county supervisor

To the Editor,

     My purpose for writing this letter to the editor is not to invoke surprise that I am supporting my husband for his re-election bid for county supervisor, but to provide a perspective that some people may not get to see.

     Wayne Manternach has been elected to the Jones County Board of Supervisors for the past 12 years. I have seen a leader who responds when called, a dedicated member of committees, a strong advocate for mental health, and an active participant in county meetings.

     At our house, we know that Tuesdays are off limits for plans, as Wayne makes attending each Jones County Board of Supervisors meeting a priority (he has only missed two meetings in his 12 years of service). The county business and public forum that occurs at each of these meetings is a great way for a supervisor to engage in the county work and to collaborate with county offices and board members.

     Wayne has served as the chairman of the East Central Mental Health Region since its inception. Wayne has taken on this role with high motivation, engagement, and purpose. He works collaboratively with nine other counties and their community service departments to build a mental health region that provides quality and accessible services for county residents of all ages.

     I have observed on multiple occasions Wayne’s desire to work in and serve Jones County regardless of location or party affiliation. Wayne does the research needed to stay informed and tries his best to come up with solutions. As we all know, it is not easy or feasible to please everyone every time, but I have seen first hand the effort that he puts in to making well-informed decisions that he strongly believes are best for the county.

     With all of the observations mentioned above in regards to the work Wayne has done with the county, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that Wayne has done all of this work while actively farming, being involved in our church, coaching teams with our kids, and volunteering at community events.

     When reflecting on Wayne’s leadership as a Jones County Supervisor, I am led to the writings of Jon Gordon, motivational speaker and author. “If they praise you, show up and do the work. If they criticize you, show up and do the work. If no one notices you, just show up and do the work. Just keep showing up, doing the work, and leading the way.”
