Marquette, West Liberty top MHS

BOYS SOCCER

Monticello played a pair of boys soccer games on back-to-back days last week, losing both to fall to a record of 4-7 on the season.

The Panthers traveled to Bellevue to face Marquette Catholic on Friday, May 3, and lost 2-0. The next day, at West Liberty, Monticello fell by a score of 6-1.

“The team played well against Marquette and West Liberty,” Monticello coach Phil Gilkerson said. “We just couldn’t take advantage of our scoring opportunities, and our opponents were able to score when given the chance.”

Against Marquette, Panther goalkeeper Alex Fagan was kept busy, making 26 saves. Monticello had a total of three shots on goal, two by Tony Wallerich and one by Kurt Stadtmueller.

Monticello did score one goal in the West Liberty game, which came from Wallerich – his 15th of the season. The Panthers had five shots on goal in that match, four from Wallerich and one from Cade Folken.

Freshmen Wyatt Coyle and Bob Bechthold shared goalkeeping duties in the match; Coyle made 14 saves and Bechthold made four.

“The team is progressing well and getting better every game,” Gilkerson said.

The Panther junior varsity also had a match May 2 at North Scott, and lost 7-0.

Substate assignments

The Panthers will play in a substate tournament that also includes Anamosa, Davenport Assumption, Dyersville Beckman, Center Point-Urbana, Bellevue Marquette, Clinton Prince of Peace, and West Branch.

Brackets and match times had not been announced at press time, but the tournament is scheduled to begin May 20.
