McDowell signs with Iowa State

Wrestling

     Alec McDowell, the Maquoketa Valley senior who won the state Class 1A 182-pound wrestling championship in February, has signed a letter of intent to wrestle for Iowa State University.

     McDowell signed on Monday, April 17 at Maquoketa Valley High School.

     “Words cannot justify what Alec has meant to the Maquoketa Valley program,” said MV wrestling coach Tim Andrews. “He has done everything we ever asked of him, and did it with a ‘yes, sir’ or ‘yes, Coach.’

     “Iowa State is very lucky to gain such an awesome talent, and will only become a better program from Alec’s presence. Alec’s best days are ahead of him.”

 

Girls track

     Maquoketa Valley placed third in a competitive field of seven teams at the Anamosa Invitational April 11.

     Monticello won the meet with 160.5 points, Anamosa was second with 116, and MV finished third with 102.5. Center Point-Urbana was a close fourth at 100.

     Winning for the Wildcats were Alison Sheehy in the discus, 117-foot-6; the 4x200 relay of Caitlin Schuman, Sam Wall, Aspen Britt and Ashley Stogdill in 1:53.10;

     Kara Orcutt was second in the 100 hurdles in 17.16.

     Finishing third were Brianna Mensen in the 400, 1:04.67; the 4x100 relay, 54.74; the shuttle hurdle relay, 1:13.68; and the distance medley relay, 4:39.77.

     On April 13, the Wildcats finished second among six teams in the Starmont Invitational in Arlington. West Delaware won with 196 points, MV was second with 114, and East Buchanan placed third with 82.

     Winners included Britt in the 400, 1L04.07; Nichole Winter in the 3,000, 13:32.63; Sheehy in the discus, 97-9.5; the 4x400 relay, 4:28.00; and the shuttle hurdle relay, 1:14.27.

     Placing second were Wilson in the 400 hurdles, 1:17.52; the 4x100 relay, 55.81; and the 4x200 relay, 1:58.69.

     In third were Britt in the 200, 29.65; Cassiddy Wilson in the 100 hurdles, 18.04; Lydia Helle in the shot put, 30-2; the sprint medley relay, 2:09.27 and the distance medley relay, 5:10.20.

    

Boys track

     Two meets occupied the Maquoketa Valley boys track and field team last week.

     At Jesup April 11, the Wildcats finished in a tie for fourth place out of 15 teams, with 66 points. Denver won with 145, Jesup was second with 79.5, and Grundy Center placed third with 70.5. MV tied with Don Bosco for fourth.

     Kyle Wilson won the 1,600-meter run in 4:43.38. Finishing second was Zak Harbach in the 100, 11.70.

     Taking third were Harbach in the long jump, 20-1.5; the 4x200 relay, 1:39.20; and the 4x800 relay, 9:24.94.

     The Wildcats then placed among nine teams at the West Delaware meet April 13, with 63 points. Decorah (134), Cascade (107) and West Delaware (93) were the top three.

     Wilson won the 800 in 2:10.38.

     In second were Harbach in the 200, 24.42; and the distance medley relay, 3:44.94.

     Finishing third were Brody Sevart in the shot put, 44-10; the weight person relay, 52.91; and the 4x800 relay, 9:29.78.

    

Golf

     Maquoketa Valley played host to North-Linn April 10 at Hart Ridge, sweeping both the boys’ and girls’ divisions.

     MV won the boys’ meet 242 to 255. Jon Seibert and Austin Snyder each shot a 54, while Patrick Hansen and Derek Mensen had 67 apiece.

     The Wildcats took the top two spots to win the girls’ meet 203 to 234. Kelly Winter was meet medalist with a 47, and Kelsey Ries added a 51. Faith Hunt shot 52 and Madison McIntyre had a 53.

     “It got pretty cold after we started, but they fourth through it, and many golfers got personal records,” MV coach Tim Andrews said.
