MHS goes 3-2; McDonald hits assist milestone
Monticello senior Tori McDonald was honored for recording her 1,000th career assist, and the Panther volleyball team went on to post a 3-2 record last week.
Included was a sweep of Camanche in a Panther home meet Sept. 24, which Monticello won 25-18, 26-24, 25-19.
The Panthers (2-1 in the River Valley Conference, 11-8 overall) then hosted their annual tournament Sept. 26, and went 2-2 for the day in a round robin format.
McDonald was honored prior to the start of the Panther win over Camanche.
“She has been good at running our offense and making good decisions,” Monticello coach Stacie Breitbach said. “She just works so hard to get better during practice, and has continued to grow as a player.”
The match itself had its high points for the Panthers as well. Monticello had to come from behind in all three of the sets. In the opener, Camanche took an early 7-3 lead before Monticello rallied, taking its first lead at 16-14 and going on to an eight-point win. Kills by Bronwyn Hodge and Keziah McQuillen, and a block by Madison Butterworth, provided the Panthers with the final three points of the set.
The second set was even more dramatic. Monticello trailed 13-17, then 21-24, before scoring five straight points to steal away the win. Included were a kill by Beka Prull, a tip by McDonald that tied it 24-24, a net violation by Camanche, and a final tip by Mallory Steiner to win it.
Steiner served the final four points for Monticello.
“Mal has just been so consistent in serving all season,” Breitbach said. “She has a tough serve.”
The Panthers had a balanced attack that included four girls getting five or more kills, led by Prull with eight. McDonald added to her assist total with 21. The team also had 60 digs, including four players in double figures: DeLainy Fellinger with 14, Emma Hynick with 13, McDonald and McQuillen with 11 apiece. McDonald also served 22-for-22.
“Our offense has been pretty widespread,” Breitbach said. “It makes us tough to defend. We had a well-balanced offense, aggressive serving, and I think we were scrappy on defense.”
Next came the Monticello Invitational on Saturday. The Panthers opened with a 12-25, 8-25 loss to Union of LaPorte City, which is ranked fifth in the state in Class 3A. Steiner had four digs and served 6-for-6 in that match. McQuillen also had four digs.
The Panthers bounced back with two wins in a row, including a 25-11, 25-14 decision over Northeast of Goose Lake. Prull had seven kills, and Steiner had 10 assists and nine digs in that one. Steiner also served 17-for-17 with four aces.
Against Mid-Prairie, Monticello won 25-16, 25-23. McDonald had 12 assists, six kills and served 14-for-14 with three aces. McQuillen also had six digs, and five kills.
The Panthers then lost a tough one against Maquoketa, winning 25-23, and losing 18-25, 13-15.
Monticello collected 39 digs in that match, led by McQuillen with 12 and Fellinger with 10. Hynick had a team-high seven kills. McDonald made 14 assists. Steiner had nine assists and served 9-for-9.
Overall for the tournament, coach Breitbach said: “We did some really nice things. But against Maquoketa, we didn’t finish like we needed to.”
