MHS shines at State
With a championship, a runner-up finish and a third place finish at the Iowa State Dance and Drill Team Association state championships, along with top-10 solo efforts, the Monticello High School dance team had shining performances.
The Panthers won the Class II Lyrical state title, took second in Class V Hip-Hop, and was third in Class VIII Pom at the event, held Nov. 30-Dec. 2 at Wells Fargo Arena and Hy-Vee Hall in Des Moines.
“I’m so very proud of these girls,” Monticello coach Amanda Hackney said. “They left it all on the floor. In Lyrical the brought the emotion, technique and storytelling. In Hip-Hop, they had fun, and in Pom the brought the fight and athleticism of dance.”
In addition, Monticello had five of the top 10 finishes, out of 68 dancers, in Class V Solo. They included Kendra Davis, second; Leah Smith, third; Arrianna Jones, fifth; Claire Tuetken, seventh; and Myra Wilson, ninth.
In the Beyond Limits category, Annie Schlarmann earned a medal.
“These girls have been working hard perfecting these routines since June,” Hackney said. “Their drive for always trying to perfect their craft is a true inspiration.
“They inspire me every day.”
The Monticello team also collected canned food items for the Monticello Food Pantry, and earned an ISDTA Cares community service certificate.
