MHS shows speed in two meets

     It has been a rarity for a team to complete even one outdoor track meet per week this spring. Last week, the Monticello High School boys track and field team competed in two.

     The second of those was a home meet in which the Panthers took sixth place out of 12 teams.

     “We had a nice team effort,” Monticello coach Greg Williams said.

     Highlights included a win for Aaron Loes in the 1,600-meter run, with a time of 4:44.20; and runner-up spots for Avery Martensen in the high jump (6-foot-2) and the 4x100 team of Max Keleher, Alex Nealson, Martensen and Gavin Cooper (45.24).

     “Lake Stahlberg had a big personal best in the shot put,” Williams said. “Both the JV and varsity 4x100 relays keep getting faster.”

     The Panthers also ran in the Saber Relays April 10, finishing seventh. Loes won the 1,600 in that meet as well, with a time of 4:43.58. Martensen won the 110 hurdles in 15.76, and the 4x100 team of Keleher, Alex Nealson, Martensen and Cooper was first in 45.59.

     Wade Picray was second in the shot put, with a throw of 44-5.5.

     In junior varsity events, the shuttle hurdle relay team of Caden Ungs, T.J. Nealson, Ben Oswald and Dane Thomas finished first.
