It was a break-even meet for the Monticello High School wrestling team in a double dual Thursday, Nov. 9 at North Cedar High School in Clarence.

The Panthers defeated North Cedar 64-15, and lost to West Liberty 45-31.

The loss was just the second in dual meets so far this season for the Panthers (8-2).

“West Liberty is a state-ranked team and they wrestle hard,” Monticello coach Ryan Luensman said. “We had our opportunities to beat them, but came up a little short. We have to take care of all aspects of the sport to beat high-level teams like them. We have to take control on and off the mat.”

Four Panthers wrestled two matches and won them both. Kale Hansen at 106 pounds, Owen Ray at 120 and Mason Reuter at 285 all went 2-0 with two pins each. Spencer Avery, at 182, won by pin and decision.

Others getting wins on the mat were Mark Sunlin by major decision, Ethan Tallman by major decision, and Kain Luensman by fall. Tallman and Luensman also won one match each by forfeit.

“Individually we had some strong performances,” coach Luensman said. “Spencer Avery, Owen Ray, Kale Hansen and Mason Reuter all had two nice wins. Bo Kramer had two very hard-fought matches and is improving each week. Ethan Tallman had a nice match against West Liberty. He battled hard and took control of the match.”

The Panthers were supposed to compete in the Highland Tournament Jan. 11, but reports of impending bad weather caused it to be cancelled.

Next up for Monticello, then, is a Jan. 16 quadrangular meet at Bellevue, which also includes Tipton and Wilton. The Panthers are also scheduled to wrestle in the Marion Tournament Jan. 18.

“We will learn from this meet and be ready to set it up Thursday,” Luensman said.
