Middle schoolers wrap up season

     Monticello’s middle school softball team recently completed its 2018 season, finishing with a record of 8-11.

     The Panthers opened their season with a doubleheader at Durant June 1, winning 12-3 and losing 10-9. Jaelyn Aitchison went 2-for-3 with a triple in the first game, and pitched a two-hitter with five strikeouts. Aleasha Schilling, Mia Jaeger and Olivia Zimmerman scored two runs apiece.

     In the second game, Aitchison was 2-for-3 with two doubles. Brea Stahlberg reached base three times and scored two runs. Stahlberg pitched and took the loss.

     In a June 4 home doubleheader against North Cedar, the Panthers lost 7-5 and 9-4. Madison Butterworth, Nora Sperfslage, Aitchison and Stahlberg all reached base twice in the first game.

     Courtney Thies hit a double in the second game, and also pitched for the Panthers.

     On June 5, the Panthers played host to Iowa City Regina and split a doubleheader, winning 10-5 and losing 11-4. Aitchison was the winning pitcher in the first game. Kayla King, Jaeger and Sperfslage each reached base twice and scored twice.

     Claire Tuetken scored two runs in the second game.

     Monticello then played host to Northeast of Goose Lake June 7, and won 13-3 and 13-12. Stahlberg pitched a one-hitter with five strikeouts in the opener Aitchison was 3-for-3 with triple and a double.

     Scoring two runs each in the second game were Emily Hendricks, Ella Glawatz and Tuetken.

     At Cascade June 8, Monticello lost 11-10 and 13-1. Schilling went 2-for-3 in the first game. King reached base twice and scored the only Panther run in the second game.

     The Panthers split a June 20 doubleheader at Camanche, winning 9-5 and losing 7-5. In the opener, Aitchison was the winning pitcher. Reagan Schneiter and Stahlberg both went 2-for-3.

     Getting hits in the second game for Monticello were Hendricks, Samantha Tuel and Codie Luce.

     The team then traveled to West Liberty for a June 22 doubleheader, losing 8-0 and winning 9-5. The Panthes were held without a hit in the first game.

     In the second game, Hendricks scored three runs. Aitchison, pitching in relief of Thies, picked up the win.

     Cascade visited Monticello June 25, and the Panthers lost 8-7 and 14-6. Aitchison went 3-for-3 with a double. Schilling was 2-for-2 with a double, and Reagan Schneiter was 2-for-3.

     Hendricks scored two runs in the second game.

     Monticello played host to Bellevue June 28 and played three games, winning 9-7 and 9-8, and losing 12-2. Marisa Grant, Katie Roher and Aitchison all batted 2-for-3 in the first game. Aitchison pitched for the win.

     Bella Mullen was 2-for-3 in the second game. Stahlberg was the winning pitcher. Jaeger’s single was the only Panther hit in the last game.
