Midland chapter has qualified leaders

FFA WEEK

     Officers in the Midland FFA Chapter are involved in a variety of competitions and activities while leading their chapter.

     Here are profiles of the Midland officers.

 

     Name: Griffin Gravel.

     Year in school: Senior.

     Office held: President.

     Parents/Guardians: Rodney and Theresa Gravel.

     Home town: Wyoming.

     SAE project: I worked at an automobile shop in Onslow called Classic Customs and Repairs, where I did various things like cleaning and assisting in the repair of vehicles.

     FFA activities: Polar Plunge, 212 Conference, District, State and National Convention; Greenhand Fire-Up, Ronald McDonald House, Agronomy.

     Most memorable FFA activity or accomplishment: When I participated at the State FFA Convention in Ag Issues with some of my friends and got second place.

     Future plans: Attend the University of Iowa and get a major in Biochemistry before transferring to medical school to get a doctorate in orthopedic surgery.

 

     Name: Delanie Uppena.

     Year in school: Senior.

     Office held: Vice President.

     Parents/Guardians: Mary and Cody Errthum.

     Home town: Wyoming.

     SAE project: Milking goats, feeding horses, being a waitress.

     FFA activities: State Convention, 212 and 360 Conference, Sub-Districts, District and State Conferences, Greenhand Fire-Up, FFA Volleyball, FFA Bowling, Night Meetings, Ski Trip, and Officer Retreat.

     Most memorable FFA activity or accomplishment: Our Officer Retreat. This event really caused me to show my strengths and weaknesses. We grew stronger as a team and I grew stronger as a person.

     Future plans: I plan to attend Kirkwood in the liberal arts program and then transfer to a four-year university with the hope of becoming an elementary P.E. teacher.

 

     Name: Taylor Bahnsen.

     Year in school: Junior.

     Office held: Secretary.

     Parents/Guardians: Carrie Bahnsen and Todd Elvidge.

     Home town: Wyoming.

     SAE project: Community Service and Landscape Management.

     FFA activities: Fruit Sales, Wreath Making, 212/360 Conference, COLT, Officer Retreat, Humane Society, SAE Tours, SAE Work Nights, Greenhand/Chapter Banquets, Greenhand Fire-Up, Industry Tours, Sub-District Volleyball, Ski Trips, Farm Safety, Night Meetings, Creed Speaking at Districts, Conduct of Meetings at State, Ag Issues, Ronald McDonald House, District Greenhand Fire-Up, “We Care” Packages, Highway Cleanups, Food Drive, Proficiency, Alumni Meeting.

     Most memorable FFA activity or accomplishment: Going to State with my Conduct of Meetings team. We worked very well together even when we were nervous, but we always pushed through it and it showed. Not only did we make it to State, but our practices were always full of laughs. Our last practice was by far the best in the hotel pool. There was never a dull moment when we were together, and seeing the smiles on everyone’s faces after we performed was amazing and always relieving. Overall it was an amazing opportunity that I will never forget.

     Future plans: To become a nurse and work at St. Luke’s on the main floor, oncology or the psychiatric unit. I am looking at attending Mount Mercy in Cedar Rapids, but I am not totally sure yet. I would really like to play softball or volleyball in college as well.

 

     Name: Brett Schoenherr.

     Year in school: Senior.

     Office held: Treasurer.

     Parents/Guardians: Randal and Jennifer Schoenherr.

     Home town: Canton.

     SAE project: Poultry Entrepreneurship and Beef Placement.

     FFA activities: Greenhand Chapter Banquet, Greenhand Fire-Up, Highway Cleanup, Farm Safety Day, FFA SAE Tour, State Livestock Judging-Ames, Chapter Officer Leadership Training, Officer Retreat, FFA Fruit Sales, FFA Poultry Exhibitor at the Wyoming Fair, Great Jones County Fair and Iowa State Fair; FFA Beef Exhibitor at the Great Jones County Fair, Special Olympics  Polar Plunge, State Convention, FFA Volleyball, FFA Ski Trip, Industry Tour, 212 Conference, Legislative Symposium at the Capitol, 360 Conference.

     Most memorable FFA activity or accomplishment: Winning second place in my Poultry Production Proficiency my sophomore year, and winning second overall in showmanship at the 2018 Iowa State FFA Poultry Show.

     Future plans: I plan to attend the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and major in animal science.

 

     Name: Shianna Rockwell.

     Year in school: Junior.

     Office held: Reporter.

     Parents/Guardians: Jeremy and Amanda Rockwell.

     Home town: Wyoming.

     SAE project: Community Service.

     FFA activities: “We Care” Packages, Greenhand Fire-Up, Greenhand/Chapter Banquet, SAE Tour, Highway Cleanup, Humane Society, CDEs, FFA Volleyball, Farm Safety, Chapter Banquet.

     Most memorable FFA activity or accomplishment: Successfully holding a World Food Day for my school. We packaged 15,000 meals for our local food pantries. We also learned more about poverty around the world through many interactive stations. We finished up the day with a Hunger Banquet, where we talked about real people and situations that they’re in involving poverty.

     Future plans:  To become a nurse. I’m not 100 percent set on a college, but I’m thinking the University of Iowa. I would love to eventually work in the Children’s Hospital as a nurse in Iowa City.

 

     Name: Ethan Orr.

     Year in school: Senior.

     Office held: Sentinel.

     Parents/Guardians: Thomas and Jennifer Orr.

     Home town: Canton.

     SAE project: I started my own lawn care business that more than doubled in size, along with raising a bred heifer to show, where I won the local show and placed second at the county show.

     FFA activities: Agronomy Competition, Farm Safety, Ag Issues, Highway Cleanup, Night Meeting, 212 and 360 Conference, Sub-District, District and State Conferences; Greenhand Fire-Up.

     Most memorable FFA activity or accomplishment: My first competition, where we moved on and did really well, and had a great experience just messing around and having fun.

     Future plans:  I plan to attend the U of I and major in accounting and go on to get my MBA. My ultimate goal is to work in forensic acoustics and fight white collar crime.
