Midland edges Kee to share district title, reach playoffs

MIDLAND RECAP

Football

Midland pulled out a 46-44 victory over Kee High Oct. 19 in Lansing, securing an Eight-player post-season slot for the third straight year.

The Eagles finished in a three-way tie for the District 3 championship, along with Central City and Turkey Valley, as all three had 6-1 district records. All three qualified for the state playoffs; Midland will open with an Oct. 26 game at Iowa Valley of Marengo.

Midland was led by quarterback Alex Smith, who completed nine of 17 passes for 250 yards and four touchdowns, including a 46-yarder to Carter Mohr. Jensen Dodge caught four passes for 131 yards and one touchdown, and Mohr had four catches for 92 yards and three scores. Smith had two rushing touchdowns, and Mohr had one.

Defensively, Jensen Dodge had an interception. Griffin Gravel led the team with 13 tackles, Lane Smalley had 11, while Brett Schoenherr and Hunter Shoaff had 10 apiece.

Cross country

Midland freshman Trenton Rickels surprised many, including his coach, by finishing ninth overall and qualifying for State, during the Class 1A State Qualifying Meet Oct. 18 at Cedar Rapids Kennedy.

Rickels ran a time of 18 minutes, 14.05 seconds to nab one of the 15 individual state qualifying spots.

“To say Trenton’s state qualifying run caught me off guard would be an understatement,” Midland coach Jon Eganhouse said. “My goal for Trenton this year was to run in the 18s by the end of the year. Trenton ran well all year, but he never medaled, and the closest he came was at the conference meet at Starmont.”

Eganhouse said Rickels finished ahead of runners who had beaten him by 30 seconds or more earlier in the season, and that Rickels had the second-fastest time for a freshman at the qualifying meet.

Rickels also moved up to 18th on Midland’s all-time cross country leader board. He will run at the Class 1A state boys’ race at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27 at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge.

Three other Eagle runners competed at the meet. Tanner Stoll ran a personal best of 21:24. Bryce Rushford and Hunter Wink ran 25:21 and 28:03, respectively.

Volleyball

Midland’s volleyball season came to an end in a Class 1A, Region 5 first round match, as the Eagles fell to host Central Elkader in three sets, 11-25, 7-25, 23-25.

It was a strong defensive game for the Eagles, who collected 42 digs and four blocks. Dig leaders included Mikayla Dosland and Ella Rupp with nine apiece, Drew Jensen with eight, and Delanie Uppena with seven. Brennah Ricketts had two blocks; Morgan Soper and Jensen had one apiece.

Uppena led the team in kills with four, followed by Jensen with three, and Dosland and Soper with two each. Dosland also had seven assists, and served 11-for-11 with three aces. Jensen served 9-for-9; Emma Dusanek and Jensen each had an ace.

The Eagles finished the season with a record of 3-27, including 2-4 in the Tri-Rivers Conference, East Division.
