GIRLS GOLF PREVIEW

Before the 2020 spring sports season was shut down, new Midland girls golf coach Ryan Steines had just one girl who planned to play, and she was a senior.

So this year’s team is brand-new, with four sophomores and their coach learning and growing together.

“All four girls are newcomers, and I am very excited to have them out,” Steines said. “I think all four have the ability to learn the game and become pretty good golfers, but it will take some time. A good season for us will be the girls having fun, wanting to go out again next year, and getting other girls to join them.”

The four are Hannah Fishwild, Gracie Franzen, Alivia Smith and Jayda Thomsen.

“With none of the girls every playing high school golf, and maybe a total of five rounds of golf combined in their lives, we are just looking to have fun and learn the game,” Steines said.

It takes four golfers to acquire a team score, and Steines said he excited that Midland will be able to.

“Two weeks ago I wasn’t sure if I would have any girls out,” he said. “We are one of three, maybe four schools (in the Tri-Rivers Conference East Division) that will be able to have a team score.”

The coach added that he is proud of the girls for joining the team.

“I think all four girls show leadership by taking a risk and trying something new,” he said. “All of the girls are excited to learn the game and to work on getting better.”
