MIDLAND RECAP

Girls track

The Midland girls track and field team “took a big forward step” at the State Class 1A Girls Track and Field meet, head coach Ryan Luensman said, with a pair of top 10 finishes.

The event was held May 17-19 at Drake University Des Moines.

Midland’s 4x400-meter relay team of Emma Dusanek, Ella Rupp, Ari Hacke and Drew Jensen reached the finals with a top-seven finish, breaking their own school record with a time of 4:12.84. The prelims were held Friday.

The team then took eighth in Saturday’s finals at 4:14.38.

“In the prelims the girls ran great, and every runner improved from our district performance,” Luensman said. “Combined, they ended up beating their school record by five seconds.

“We didn’t run as well in the finals, but I couldn’t be more proud of these girls.”

The other top-10 finish came from Jensen in the 400-meter dash, who was ninth overall in 1:01.54. Teammate Dusanek ran 16th in the same event, which was run Thursday.

“Both girls set personal bests,” Luensman said. “This race set the tone for our 4x400 the next day.”

The coach said the Eagles get tougher mentally and physically each year.

“The results are showing on the track,” he said. “We don’t graduate any seniors, so that is very exciting for our program.”

Boys track

Midland junior Luke Lasack competed in two throwing events during the State Class 1A Boys Track and Field Meet in Des Moines.

Lasack was ninth in the shot put on May 17, with a throw of 48-foot-10.75; and ninth in the discus May 18, at 136-10.

Girls golf
