Midland school project continues into winter

Our students and staff have adjusted very well to the changes caused by our construction project as far as getting from one class to another.

Some may wonder what the decision-making process is when it comes to school cancellations or delays. First and foremost, student and everyone’s safety is the number one priority. With the extreme cold temperatures and wind chills, we take into consideration that fact that we have lengthy bus routes and community pick-up places.

Another major factor for Midland is that our students go between two buildings throughout the day and we have found that two hours can make a big difference in the temperatures for them.

Regardless of what the reason is for the delay or cancellation, I consult with Mr. John Stender, our transportation director, and other superintendents when making the decision. Every effort is made to make these decisions in a timely fashion so plans can be made accordingly for the families of our district. Sometimes the decision is made the night before and if something comes up in the morning, the decision is usually made by 6 a.m. Once the decision is made, Mr. Stender and I contact different media outlets and we make the announcements on Facebook as well as on our website.

With the recent weather, the construction workers have also had to make adjustments as to how they do their work. The work is continuing on the masonry wall thanks to temporary shelters and heat. The other work of foundation building, pouring of concrete, placing of steel beams, and plumbing and electrical works is all progressing. The shop and wrestling practice room areas are scheduled to open for business sometime in early January. Once that move is done, the wrestlers will no longer practice in the Paul Pete Center, and we will be starting the process of converting the shop into a band room.

Our new gym floor has been installed and we have hosted a number of events. It turned out very nice and when we get the new gym completed, we will have some of the best athletic facilities in our area. It has been very unfortunate that our volleyball teams did not have a home court and that our P.E. class had to find alternate class space. For that, I apologize.
