By achieving little goals, the Monticello High School girls golf team achieved their first big goal of the post-season, winning the Class 2A Regional First Round Meet Monday, May 13 at the Dyersville Golf and Country Club.

The Panthers had four of the top seven scores on the way to a 377 team score, 24 shots ahead of runner-up Wilton.

“The kids didn’t put a lot of pressure on themselves,” Monticello coach Joe Steen said. “We had target scores, and we knew if we shot those, we’d be good, and they pretty much did.”

Dru Kramer led the Panthers with a 92 to be medalist runner-up, one shot behind medalist Hanna Nissen of Camanche.

Lydia Recker followed with a 94, Marissa McNally had a 95, and Beka Prull shot 96. Those three were fifth, sixth and seventh respectively. Lilly Lambert added a 103, and Karli Recker shot 109.

“They had pretty good attitudes,” Steen said. “And the fact we had played the course before, helped.”

The win advanced Monticello to the Class 2A Regional Final, to be held Monday, May 20 at the Wahkonsa Country Club near Durant.

“I thought the girls did a really good job today,” Steen said. “We survive and advance.”
