Monti Cubs win one of three games

     Monticello played three games of semi-pro baseball in recent action, and came away with one victory.

     The win came in a road game at Holy Cross May 31, a 9-4 Monticello triumph. The Cubs jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning – a two-run double by Tanner Felton was a key hit – and led throughout. Four Cubs had two hits apiece: Michael Reuter, Jacob Thompson, Tanner Felton and Zach Monk. Tanner Felton pitched the first three innings and got the win.

     “We got off to a good start and didn’t let up,” Monticello player/manager Garett Hanken said. “Top to bottom, we had some good at bats.”

     Prior to that, the Cubs lost a 9-0 decision at home against Key West, picking up just four hits, including two by Tyler Felton.

     “We couldn’t get anything going at the plate,” Hanken said. “Parker (Kray, starting pitcher) did a nice job of keeping us in it, but they got hot and buried us.”

     On June 3, Monticello traveled to Dubuque and lost 10-4. The Cubs took a 4-1 lead with four runs in the top of the third inning, with Reuter, Tanner Felton and Kyle Huxford getting RBI hits. But Dubuque answered by scoring nine runs over the next three innings.

     “We let this one get away from us,” Hanken said. “Nick Blakesly did a great job on the mound after not pitching for a few years. A few mistakes snowballed on us.”

     Tanner Felton, Huxford and Blakesly had two hits apiece.

     The Cubs are 1-4 in Eastern Iowa Hawkeye League play, 3-5 overall.
