The schedule was altered a bit by winter weather, but the Monticello High School boys basketball team eventually closed its regular season with a pair of River Valley Conference wins.

The Panthers (8-10, 10-11) rallied from a 10-point first half deficit to defeat Bellevue 63-58 Feb. 6 in Monticello. They were supposed to play West Liberty Thursday, Feb. 8, but winter storms caused the game to be postponed until Saturday afternoon, when Monticello beat West Liberty 51-38, also at MHS.

Bellevue jumped out to a 21-18 lead by the end of the first quarter of the Tuesday game, and opened it to 10, 35-25, late in the second quarter. The Panthers rallied with a 7-0 run to end the half, getting back to within three at 35-32.

“Obviously it was a huge factor to close the half with that run,” Monticello coach Tim Lambert said.

Monticello took the lead midway through the third quarter, and led 53-48 when the period ended. That lead was extended to as many as nine before the Comets rallied.

A Bellevue three-point basket with 8.2 seconds to play cut the margin to three, 61-58, but two free throws by Kyle Sperfslage with 6.6 seconds to play helped seal the win for Monticello.

Jacob Manternach had an outstanding game, shooting 10-for-13 from the field and finishing with 20 points, five rebounds and four assists. Sperfslage totaled 17 points and three steals. Alex Nealson had eight points, 11 rebounds, six assists, three steals and two blocks. Avery Martensen came off the bench to score six points.

“It seems like every time we play Bellevue, Jacob has a huge game,” coach Lambert said. “Avery Martensen and Ty Kehoe both gave us a big spark off the bench.”

Monticello had to postpone its Senior Night – it was rescheduled for the district game Feb. 12 – but the Panthers put their seniors on the floor to start the West Liberty game Saturday.

“We started our seniors, and it was fun to see them out there together,” Lambert said.

The Panthers dominated the middle two quarters, outscoring West Liberty 28-17, to open a 42-28 lead, and stayed in control the rest of the way.

Alex Nealson shot 9-for-12 from the field and scored 20 points. Justin Recker added 10 points, and Jacob Manternach had eight points, six assists and two steals.

“Alex had a huge game,” the coach said. “They couldn’t guard him inside. He had some great finishes, and was very active.

“It was nice to get the game in, and nice to get a win heading into the postseason.”

Monticello was scheduled to play North Cedar Feb. 12 in Monticello in the district quarterfinals. The winner will play Iowa City Regina Thursday, Feb. 15, 6:30 p.m. in Cascade. The district final is Feb. 20 at Maquoketa.
