Monticello faced two of its strongest junior varsity girls basketball opponents last week, and defeated them both.

It started with a 43-26 home victory over Northeast of Goose Lake Feb. 4, as Jaelyn Aitchison scored 20 points, shooting 4-for-6 from three-point range. She also had seven steals.

“Jaelyn had an outstanding shooting night,” Monticello coach Chuck Welsch said.

Brea Stahlberg had eight points and five rebounds. Reagan Schneiter contributed five points and four rebounds. Lydia Recker had four points and two steals. Elise Kehoe had two points and four rebounds. Madison Butterworth and Katie Roher scored two points apiece.

On Feb. 7, the Panthers (16-3) traveled to Cascade and scored a 35-31 win after trailing by one point at halftime. Aitchison had 11 points and seven rebounds. Bronwyn Hodge had 11 points and seven rebounds. Stahlberg had five points and five rebounds. Schneiter had four points and two steals. Roher scored four points. Monticello had just 14 turnovers, and outrebounded the Cougars 31-20.

“After a few baskets inside, it made everything else open up,” Welsch said. “We scored 18 points in the fourth quarter. Katie and Jaelyn knocked down two big threes, Brea had a couple of nice assists, and Bronwyn came up with two put-backs late in the game. It was a total team effort.”
