Monticello High School’s cross country teams found themselves tangling with several ranked teams in the highly competitive Anamosa Invitational Saturday, Sept. 22 at Anamosa Middle School.

“That is a quality meet,” Monticello coach Dan Sauser said. “It’s nice to see some teams we haven’t seen. You have to step it up and run your best against teams like those.”

The Panthers finished fifth out of 16 teams in the boys’ race, and sixth out of 15 in the girls’ event. Finishing above them were several ranked teams.

The boys’ race was won by Tipton, ranked second in Class 2A. Other ranked teams finishing above the Panthers were Camanche (15th in 2A) and Calamus-Wheatland (fourth in 1A).

Four ranked teams finished ahead of Monticello in the girls’ race, including the winner, Solon (fifth in 3A). Also up there were Cascade (13th in 2A), Springville/Central City (seventh in 2A) and Iowa City High (10th in 4A).

Both Panther teams are ranked as well; the boys came into the meet sixth in 2A, and the girls were 11th in 2A.

Depth was key to the Panthers’ finish in the boys’ race. Unfortunately for Monticello, that depth wasn’t enough to move them a few notches higher. The Panthers were fifth, but just 12 points out of second place.

“We were just on the other end,” Sauser said. “But we had a solid race out of our top three, and our fourth through seventh runners ran really well.”

The Panthers posted two personal records, from Zach Chapman and Carter Cruise. Carter Kurt beat his previous season best by 25 seconds.

Cole Cruise led the team with a 14th place finish, Jasper Nietert was 17th, David Titman ran 26th, Chapman was 30th and Daltyn Kramer was 39th.

Monticello’s girls were again strong in the top four positions, and are still looking for a fifth runner to move closer to those four. The Panthers did run Saturday without varsity runners Makenna Patterson (injury) and Triniti Etzel (illness).

Karle Kramer was 13th overall, Gabrielle Steiner was 28th, Lydia Recker ran 30th, and Emily Schlarmann was 40th. Karle Kramer and Schlarmann ran season best times. Dru Kramer was 77th, in personal record time.

“She’s got a great frame of mind,” Sauser said of Dru Kramer. “She knows how to push herself.”

Two Panthers who have run varsity races in past years returned from injury at Anamosa, Sydney Ballou and Lauren Lambert. Ballou would have been fifth on the team and Lambert seventh had they run in the varsity race.

Six of the seven JV girls ran season best times, and Kehde Campbell ran a PR time.

“I’m really happy with Kehde,” Sauser said.

In the JV boys’ race, Austin Timm was fifth, Levi Temple 11th and Grant Hospdarsky 12th. Temple ran a PR time, and Hospodarsky ran a season best time.

“All three are capable of running at the varsity level,” Sauser said.

Gavin Baugh also made the top 20, with a 17th place finish.

Thursday meets ahead

The Panthers have a consistent schedule ahead – their next four meets are on Thursdays. The first of those is Sept. 27 at Western Dubuque. Race times are 4:45 p.m. for varsity girls, 5:15 p.m. for varsity boys, 5:40 p.m. for JV girls, and 6:20 p.m. for JV boys.

The other Thursday events are Oct. 4 at DeWitt Central, Oct. 11 in the River Valley Conference Meet in Iowa City, and hosting the state qualifying meet Oct. 18.
