The Monticello 12-and-under baseball team brought home some hardware from the USSSA State Class A 12-and-under Baseball Tournament July 23-25 in Cedar Rapids.

The team bounced back from an 0-1-1 start to win three straight games and the state title in the Silver Division.

Monticello trailed 5-0 in each of the first two games, and wound up losing the first one 8-5 and tying the second one 7-7.

In Silver Division bracket play, Monticello scored wins of 8-5 and 8-2 to reach the finals. There, the team scored a 14-2 victory over a team from Ankeny to claim the title.

“The kids really did a good job of keeping their composure and battling back,” head coach Bob Welter said. “They stayed with it.”

Individual highlights came from Brody Spahr, who hit three home runs and two triples during the tournament.

“And for the most part we pitched well,” Welter added. “It was a good season.”
