Monticello Chamber is all for ‘small’

     Are you ready to shop, eat, and celebrate with the small businesses in the area this holiday season? On Monday, Nov. 16, the Monticello Area Chamber of Commerce, Inc. (MACC) received a mayoral proclamation announcing Saturday, Nov. 28 as Small Business Saturday, otherwise known as #ShopSmall, and taking place nationwide.

     “Whereas, 96 percent of consumers who shopped on Small Business Saturday agree that shopping at small, independently-owned businesses supports their commitment to making purchases that have a positive social, economic, and environmental impact and are essential to their community; and

     “Whereas, the MACC, Inc. supports our local businesses that create jobs, boost our local economy, and preserve our communities;

     “Now, therefore, I, Brian Wolken, Mayor of Monticello, do hereby proclaim Saturday, Nov. 28, 2020 as Small Business Saturday and urge the residents of our community, and communities across the country, to support small businesses and merchants on Small Business Saturday and throughout the year.”

     Small Business Saturday, founded by American Express in 2010, is held each year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving to encourage people to shop at independently-owned businesses online and at storefronts in their communities.

     For businesses, it is a great opportunity to gain new customers, grow sales, and carry momentum into the holiday shopping season. While shopping is the main focus of this holiday, it is not a necessary component. People who want to acknowledge this day can do so by promoting it on social media or recommending your favorite small business to your friends and family.

     “It’s an activity that helps support our local area economies and promotes vibrant, diverse communities,” shared MACC Executive Director Jan Hoag. “This is a nationwide movement fueled by shoppers, business owners, and organizers who come together and celebrate the community because they know it matters.”

     The full proclamation can be found on the MACC’s website at www.macc-ia,us. For more information on how you can be a part of Small Business Saturday, contact the MACC office at 319-465-5626 or e-mail chamber@macc-ia.us.
