Monticello Cubs rack up hits, but not victories
The Monticello Cubs collected a total of 29 hits in three semi-pro baseball games last week.
Unfortunately for the Cubs, none of those games turned into Monticello wins, as the Cubs were outscored in all three.
Those included an 8-6 loss at Key West June 5, an 8-6 first round loss to Epworth in the Farley Tournament June 7, and a 13-8 home loss to Rickardsville June 10.
Monticello had two leads in the Key West game: a 3-0 advantage when Kyle Huxford hit a three-run homer in the top of the first inning, and a 6-3 lead thanks to a three-run third. But Key West scored five runs over the next three innings to secure the win.
“We had our chances, but couldn’t put them away,” Cubs player/manager Garett Hanken said. “Hux had a nice game at the plate.”
Huxford finished 2-for-3 with four runs batted in. A.J. Reuter was 3-for-4, and Jake Hall went 2-for-4. Starting pitcher Parker Kray took the loss.
The Epworth game was similar; Monticello led 3-0 after three innings, including a two-run single by A.J. Reuter in the third inning. Epworth scored six unanswered runs to take a 6-3 lead, and the Cubs rallied to tie it with three in the bottom of the fifth. Epworth’s two runs in the top of the seventh decided it.
A.J. Reuter went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and Nick Miller was 2-for-3. A.J. Reuter started and took the loss.
“He threw well enough o win, but our defense was sloppy, and it led to some long innings,” Hanken said. “I liked the way we continued to fight until the end.”
Monticello trailed 11-2 after 6½ innings of the Rickardsville game, but fought back to get within three runs before Rickardsville added a pair of insurance runs.
“It could have gotten away from us completely, but we gave ourselves chances in the seventh and eighth,” Hanken said.
Hall was 3-for-6; Zach Monk and Tyler Felton had two hits and two RBIs apiece. Tyler Felton was the starting pitcher, and was handed the defeat.
The Cubs (1-6, 3-8) play at Placid June 16 at 1:30 p.m., and at home against Worthington June 17 at 1 p.m.
