Monticello 49, Cascade 41
Hosting Cascade for round two of the season series, the Monticello boys basketball team took the sweep, topping the Cougars 49-41 behind 20 points and six threes from Alex Jamison.
Cascade led 18-17 after one quarter and then by two, 28-26, at the break, but the Panther defense turned up the heat in the second half.
“We talk a lot about holding teams to single-digit quarters,” Panther coach Tim Lambert said. “They had eight in the third and five in the fourth, so it was our defense. I mean, we’re going to win and lose with our defense. Obviously, you have to score, but we’ll score enough to win if we play good defense. To hold them to 41, that’s pretty good.”
Lambert said the team’s play on the defensive end has been the story this season.
“It’s gotta be consistent,” Lambert commented. “And when it is, I think we’re pretty good.”
The Panthers defense was just that in the second half, as the Panthers outscored the Cougars 23-13 to take the eight-point win in a game that was aired live on KCRG 9.2.

Monticello 53, Benton 45
In the third home game of the week on Jan. 31, the Panthers battled to an eight-point win over the Benton Bobcats.
The Panther defense locked down the Bobcats in the opening quarter, as Monti got out to a 12-3 lead after one frame. The Benton offense got going in the second quarter, putting up 19 points and trimming the Panther lead to four, 26-22.
“We got the good start and then, you know, when you play a 3A school, they’re going to have a lot of athletes, and they did,” Lambert said. “Sometimes when we get a lead, I think we get comfortable and instead of getting that ‘put them away’ attitude, we kind of let up and then it’s a four-point game. We just gotta find that want to put people away.”
Monti outscored the Bobcats 17-11 in the third quarter to push the lead back to 10, 43-33. After a 12-10 fourth frame, in favor of the visitors, the Panthers improved their record to 13-4 on the season.
“We just didn’t guard the arc,” Lambert added. “They made 12 threes, and coming in, they hadn’t shot it very well. But they got good looks, had quite a few kids that played last year and we just gotta get up and defend a little better. But it was a good win. Coming off a big win on Friday night with a short turnaround playing at 11 a.m., I thought we looked a little gassed. But it was good.”

Beckman 59, Monticello 51
The Panthers followed the rout of Easton Valley with a tough loss to Beckman on Jan. 27, as the Blazers left town with a 59-51 win.
A hot start got Monti out to a 21-14 lead after the first frame, but the Blazers used a 19-6 second quarter to take a 33-27 lead into halftime.
“I told the kids we needed to get a good start and we did,” Lambert commented. “We made some shots early, moved the ball, got some great looks and just knocked them down and defended.”
The Panthers cut into the lead in the third, winning the quarter, 12-11, but a 15-point fourth quarter for Beckman kept them out front.
“I thought everything we did well in the first quarter, we didn’t do well for most of the rest of the game,” Lambert said. “We just had no composure. We let all the emotion of it get to us and it became one-on-one on offense and just had defensive breakdowns. We still had plenty of opportunities, but our mental game and our execution of the scouting report has to get better.”
