Monticello Farmers Market

This week we are painting the town purple for Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month. Stop by the market on Wednesday and sign up to win a flower arrangement from Muddy Boots Flower Farm. The arrangement will feature purple larkspur. If you are wearing purple, you will get another entry in the drawing.

Here are some ways to lower your risk of Alzheimer’s:

1. Know your numbers. Blood pressure, BMI, cholesterol, blood glucose. If your numbers are out of normal range, work with your doctor to correct them.

2. Take a cognitive test to have a baseline of your current thinking skills to compare with over time.

3.Keep your muscles. Weight or resistance training will prevent muscle loss. Don’t forget aerobic exercise!

4. Maintain a healthy weight

5. Eat your veggies! Lots of veggies. And fruit, whole grains, nuts, lean protein, and low-fat dairy. Make fish a part of your diet or talk to your doctor about a fish oil supplement.

6. Skip the after supper snack.

7. Sleep is just as important as diet and exercise. Aim for eight hours a night.

8. Balance. Every four and a half years of work stress equates to an additional year of brain aging. Yoga, massage, exercise, and regular vacations all help.

9. Keep busy. Hobbies, friendships, trying new activities, listening to music and singing or playing an instrument are all good for your brain.

10. Don’t smoke.

Market days are Wednesday afternoon from 3 to 5:30 pm and Saturday morning from 8 to 11 am.

The Monticello Farmers Market is located at Willow Shelter, next to Pizza Ranch. Follow us on Facebook for market updates and pictures. We look forward to seeing you at the market!
